The answer is sent back to the user after the inference is done, and it is encrypted again. The hardware also makes cryptographic proof, called attestation, which lets the user's device check that everything is working as it should. This mix of encryption, passkeys, TEEs, and attestation makes a chain of trust that is meant to keep data safe from start to finish.


Why It's Important

Confer is a huge change from the way AI works right now. Most chatbots are based on centralised models that use user data to make them work better. Marlinspike's way of thinking is the opposite: the model should help the user without learning from them. This idea is similar to the ideas behind Signal, which showed that privacy-first design can work on a large scale.

4.Microsoft Issues Patch for Actively Exploited Windows Zero-Day 

Microsoft's First Zero-Day of 2026: Hackers Are Already Going After CVE-2026-20805

On Patch Tuesday in January, the flaw, CVE-2026-20805, was made public. Both defenders and attackers have quickly taken notice of it. Microsoft's first zero-day of 2026 shows how hard it is to keep popular operating systems safe.


CVE-2026-20805 was found by Microsoft's own threat intelligence team. This flaw lets an authorised attacker leak a memory address from a remote ALPC (Advanced Local Procedure Call) port. This might not seem like a big deal, but security experts say that leaking memory addresses can make Address Space Layout Randomisation (ASLR) less effective, which is a key defence against attacks that try to change memory or cause buffer overflows.


Dustin Childs from Trend Micro's Zero Day Initiative said that hackers could use the leaked memory address to run any code they want as part of a bigger exploit chain. This means that a bug that looks like it only lets out a little bit of information could be the first step in a system breach that does a lot of damage.


The CVSS score of 5.5 for the vulnerability means that it is of medium severity. But the fact that it is being used so much makes it a lot more important than just the number.


Federal Warning and Need for a Patch

Not long after Microsoft released a patch, the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) added CVE-2026-20805 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) list. So far, no one has reported any exploitation, but the more flaws that are found, the more likely it is that attackers will use them as weapons.

Employees also said that the leaked dataset has unique project codenames and taxonomy identifiers, like "blossom IDs." The presence of these internal references, employee names, and matching URLs strongly suggests that the material is real code from Target's development environment and not fake code.


Changes to security that happen more quickly

After the event, Target made a "faster" security change that made it harder for people to get to its Enterprise Git server. A current employee sent a screenshot of a company-wide Slack message that said, "Starting January 9, 2026, you will need to connect to a Target-managed network, either on-site or through a VPN, to access git.target.com." Before, workers could access the server from the public internet. It is now locked up and can't be accessed from the outside.


This change is in line with how Target already lets people access GitHub.com, which is where its open-source projects are hosted. Git.target.com, on the other hand, is only for internal development and requires employees to sign in. The sudden limit shows that Target is trying to stop the code from being shared even more.


Possible Causes: Malware or an Insider

We still don't know what caused the leak. Alon Gal, Hudson Rock's CTO and a security researcher, said that his team found a Target employee's workstation that had been infected with infostealer malware in late September 2025. People say that the infected computer could use internal services like IAM, Confluence, wiki, and Jira without any problems. Gal said that many Target workers have gotten malware, but only a few of them had IAM credentials or access to the wiki. This makes this case very important.


There is no direct evidence that this infection is linked to the source code that is being sold right now. But attackers often steal data and then try to sell or leak it months later. For example, the Clop ransomware gang used data they stole as early as July 2025 to blackmail people in October of that year. This pattern suggests that the Target leak may have come from a previous breach.


How big is the hole?

The person who made the threat says that the full dataset is about 860GB, but BleepingComputer has only looked at a 14MB sample that includes five partial repositories. This small part of the archive even had real internal code and system references, which means that the whole archive is probably very sensitive. If this is true, the leak could show off apps, deployment pipelines, and maybe even systems that customers use that are only available to them.


People are worried about Target's reputation, the possibility of intellectual property theft, and the possibility of attackers finding weak points because the dataset is so big. BleepingComputer gave Target the links to the Gitea repositories and said they would give Hudson Rock's threat intelligence findings to help with the investigation. Hugging Face models can run code from a distance because popular AI libraries have bugs.

When the bad metadata is loaded, it can run on its own. This is what makes remote code execution (RCE) possible.

Nvidia gave the bug the CVE-2025-23304 number and fixed it in NeMo 2.3.2. Unit 42 found more than 700 Hugging Face models that used NeMo formats. This shows how big the problem could be.


Uni2TS is the name of Salesforce's Time Series Library.

The Morai foundation model for time series analysis from Salesforce is based on Uni2TS. Hugging Face is the only place you can use it.The Safetensors format is supposed to be safer than pickle files. But Uni2TS uses Hydra's instantiate() to decode configuration arguments, which makes it riskier. Salesforce moved quickly, releasing CVE-2026-22584 and a fix on July 31, 2025. A spokesperson for the company said they fixed the problem before it got worse and that they hadn't found any proof that anyone had accessed customer data without permission.


Salesforce's models are still very popular and have been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times, even though the problem was fixed. This means that a lot of people need to use patched versions so that no one can take advantage of them.


FlexTok from Apple and EPFL VILAB is a way to process images.

Apple and EPFL's Visual Intelligence and Learning Lab worked together on the FlexTok program. It lets AI models see pictures. It uses . like Uni2TS does.It is based on Hugging Face's PyTorchModelHubMixin and uses safetensors files. When metadata is decoded and sent to Hydra's instantiate() function, it can be attacked. FlexTok isn't as well-known as it could be; it has tens of thousands of downloads, mostly from EPFL VILAB models, but the risk is still there.


Apple and EPFL fixed the problem by switching to YAML for configuration files, adding a list of safe classes, and updating the documentation to make it clear that only trusted models should be loaded. This method with layers makes it less likely that RCE will happen by accident.

The Register got in touch with Hugging Face and the people who work on Hydra, NeMo, Uni2TS, and FlexTok. Microsoft's own threat intelligence team found the flaw, which is known as CVE-2026-20805, and made it public on the first Patch Tuesday of the year.
